Hello, My name is John W. Moss III from Phila., Pa. I'm researching my Moss lines and have had very little success, maybe you've come across us. My Great-Grandfather, John A. Moss and his four brothers; Harold (Harry), Bertram, Victor A. and Russell, came from Liecestershire or Lancashire, England in 1901 with thier mother whose name I believe was Clarissa. Clarissa's husband William b. abt. 1863 supposedly died at a young age in England and she re-married here in the States to a man named Anderson. I believe she and Mr. Anderson then moved to New Jersey. I've located John A. (my great-grandfather) on a 1920 U.S. Federal Census residing with his wife Rose H., son John William b. 1913 and mother-in-law Mary Ryan on Church Rd. in Cheltenham Twp., Pa. I found Victor and his wife Cecilia M. Residing on Darien St. in Philadelphia and Harry, wife Margaret and brother Bertram residing on Howell St. in Philadelphia. Unfortunately I've nothing solid on Russell or Clarissa. In all three census records it states that they came from England in 1900 or 1901. Victor & Cecilia M. had a son named Victor Alcida Moss who died in WWII and there is a recreation center named for him here in the city (Moss A.A.), Harry's family moved to New Jersey at some point and John A. had a second son named Jack from an extramarital affair. Jack was born abt. 1927. This is all of the information that I have on this family currently. I do have some old Moss photos. I'm descendant of John Moss, born London, England Jan 01 1774, died in Philadelphia, PA April 5 1847. Came to the US in 1793 and remained all his life. He was a very prominent and generous man in his days. I personally visited Philadelaphia during my research, I contacted then the US History curator whom corroborated my findings. Have you run across Eldad Smith (1740-1805) and his wife Sarah (Easton). They lived in East Hartford where their children were baptized in the area of Hoccanum/Glastonbury/Wethersfield. Many errors are published and cited re this family but I'm descended from his grandson Seth Smith & his first wife Lucina (Webster) He removed from Fredonia/Pomfret, Chautauqua Co., NY in 1833 to Bloomfield/Bristol, Trumbull Co., OH where she died. He was remarried there to Esther (Hungerford) and the new couple with his children (among whom was my g-grandfather Ozro Jackson Smith). They removed to Montcalm Co., MI where he was the first white settler in 1855. Any information will really be appreciated. Hello, I'm researching Henry MOSS and wife Anna VOSS oral family history says they arrived in USA in 1861/1862 in New Orleans as ship was docking (my Gr Aunt, Elizabeth was br. then. During the Civil War the Fairfax County Clerk, Alfred Moss, and his wife, Martha Gunnell Moss, saved the will from destruction. He married Maria Worthington born 1834, and after her death married her sister Hannah WORTHINGTON born 1842. Mahlon MOSS and his children are my ancestors. Our family tree was professionally completed, but lost with the loss of a relative. Mahlon's line traced to Sioux Indian, and Sitting Bull. I am looking for any indications that someone may have for this link. Mahlon appears to have had a sister Mary Ann, born about 1837, and appears to have had a brother William, although that is unconfirmed. The MOSS children to Mahlon were Dora, Franklin, Elizabeth, Ida M., Mry, Silas, William, Charles, Laura. Although the family is in Pennsylvania throughout the census and at death, Laura is listed born in Virginia. She may be their daughter, or may have been a relative taken in. All other children are PA born. Mahlon fought in the Civil War and was wounded at Yorktown February 1962, and received Distinguished Service. He was a farmer, then Hosler, then Blacksmith, then Town Councilman for Bristol PA. He is buried in Bristol Cemetery, PA. Any connections to this line would be appreciated

I live in Sun Valley Idaho. Our elevation is from 5,000 ft. to 10,000 ft. I have been going into the mountains and transporting moss that grows on fallen trees, ground and around mountain springs to my garden. The moss that I have is doing quite well, but I am wandering what the name of this fungus is and if there are any tips to growing. It is a very dense dark green-looks and feels like a soft carpet. When blooming?, a brown thin stalk appears 1-2" high with a bulb at the top releasing the spores. It absolutely intrigues me and would love to know more about it. Thank you for your help. I have been working on the Moss genealogy and am trying to locate information on: John A. Moss born 1790 in Buckingham Co., VA. All I have on John is his date of birth and that he married Elizabeth Scruggs in 1818 in Virginia. Elizabeth was born in 1799 in Buckingham Co., VA. (I don�t know her parents� names) John and Elizabeth supposedly moved to Tennessee by 1844. In the marriage notices online (performed by Rev. Rene Chastain, Jr. starting in 1786) I found a William Moss who married Rebecca Johnson on 02-01- 1787. I thought he might be a possibility because his marriage fits in the right time frame for John�s birth. There is also a Thomas Moss who married Betsey Toney ** on 22-02-1787. There was a John Moss who married Susanna Strong on 25-07-1793. This was after John�s birth but, I was wondering if the 3, William, Thomas, and John might be related. My brick wall is Chilton Moss b. about 1780, d. 1813 at River Raisin Massacre. He married Lucy Templemon and had two daughters, Amelia and Lucinda. I am seeking info on the parents of Pearlina Moss who was born in TN in 1859. It is believed her mother's maiden name was Fretwell.
Pearlina married William Cullen Upton in 1878 in Smith Co TN. "Lina" is listed with her husband, William Cullen Upton on the 1880 Census of Logan Co AR. Also listed in same area, was her brother George W. Moss and family. Pearlina "Lina" Moss Upton died around 1891 in Hot Springs leaving her husband and only living child, a daughter, Mable Clare Upton who was born in 1886. A son, Samuel Moss had died when he was around 2 years old. .
Her brother, George W. Moss and family moved to TX aound ca 1890 and were listed on the 1910 census of Collinsworth Co. TX. Some of the members of the George W. Moss family were, Wilder E., W.J., Callie, Ella, Willie, Mildred and Lillie Moss. Some of the siblings later lived in Shamrock, TX.
Mable Clare Upton Williams was my husband's grandmother.

I have reached a stone wall in my research. I am looking for information on James Madison Moss, b. 1842 in North Carolina. I believe he was born in Franklin County, and served in the 47th NC Infantry during the Civil war. He had three sons: William T. Moss in 1861, maybe with Martha Gilbert as his wife, James Newton Moss in 1872, in Tennessee with Martha Gilbert, and Robert W. Moss in 1883, also in Tennessee. The family moved to Lonoke County, Arkansas, but I don't know if James Madison Moss was still alive. I know he was dead by 1900. William's mother may have been different. I was told that James was either full or almost full blooded Indian, possible Cherokee. and that descendants were offered Indian land in Oklahoma. The only reason I believe James M. Moss of Franklin Co. NC is the correct one is that in the 1860 Census of Franklin Co. both Mosses and Gilberts were living there.

Also, is there anyone in Lonoke County or Little Rock, Arkansas who may remember my mom, Madie Louise Moss, especially in the late 1940's or early 1950's. When she lived in Little Rock, she used her middle name, Lou Moss, and was a car hop at the Razorback Drive In. Thank you.

I am a direct decendant of John Moss 1603/4 of Wallingford new Haven Connecticut. I have been unable to find any confirmation to his birth place in England. Infact I have been unable to find anything in the form of Documentation before 1639. There are many many many peolpe who have posted on sites that he is from Manchester Lancashire Eng, even though the records say he was christened 1597 6 years prior to his birth. Looking for descendants of Julius Moss, born in Bavaria, Germany in 1852. He came to the United States in c. 1875. In 1895, moved to Wheeling West Virginia. He married Celia Reich who was born in Austria in 1860. She died in Wheeling West Virginia in 1912. Julius Moss was a business owner and started 'Architectural Iron & Wire Works' with his brother in law E. A. Reich. Julius Moss retired and died in St. Louis, MO. in 1904.

I have quite a lot of information on her and the Moss family but can't seem to find anything about Moses before he married her before 1831.If anyone has any information about who Moses parents were or any of his brothers or sisters were I would be thrilled to hear from you or even any advice to find out this info. They moved to Indiana in the 1840s and I think they lived near Washinton, Pa. before they moved to Indiana. Both died in Wells Co. ,In.

1850-52 King's Mountain area of York County, SC. Looking for any information on siblings or parents of Alexander Nance Moss, born abt 1850-2 In King's Mountain area of York Co., SC. Supposedly acted as a water boy during the civil war. Cannot find any reference to A.N. Moss in the 1860 census of York Co. May have been related to the White or Farmer families of the same location. A. N. was found in Ashley County, AR, by the mid 1870's where he became a master carpenter and married Emma Lowe. His daughter Margaret Mae Moss was my grandmother.

CHARLES H. MOSS: Our great-grandfather, Charles H. Moss was born in Kensington (Phila) 13 Jan 1838. We only know his mother's name was Mary. His dad died in a few years, and then when he was 7 his mother died, and he was sent to live with a Benjamin Field in Upper Dublin, PA. When Charles was about 15, Mr. Field died and Charles became a drummer in the army.

my name is Jamey Lee Moss, I am 33 years old, I have wanted to know much about my family but my father just doesn't let out much information. My great grandmother Rose Moss lived in Washington Illinois until her death just a couple of year ago, my grand father past away just before that. Charles H. (Henry?/Herbert?) Moss, born 13 Jan 1838, Kensington (Philadelphia, PA). Dad unknown. Mother's name was shown as Mary Moss on his veteran's pension application. He was raised by a Benjamin Field of Phila. after his mother died at the age of 5 or 6. He died in 1928 and is buried in the Old Soldiers Cemetery in Vineland, NJ.
